A model for reconciliation
Many organisations across Australia are joining what has become a national effort towards closing the life expectancy gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous children. Reconciliation Australia’s Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) program provides organisations with a framework. Each organisation approaches the program from their own area of interest and expertise, while the overarching goal of the program is about closing the gap.
A RAP is a simple plan based on building good relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians, showing respect for Indigenous peoples and cultures, and developing career and other opportunities for them. Organisations are made accountable for their commitments through public scrutiny (RAPs are available on the Reconciliation Australia website) coupled with the inclusion of timelines, performance indicators and individuals or groups that are identified as responsible for the execution of each RAP action.
