Indigenous Australians - part of the Australian legend
|
Where Aboriginal Australians have been included in the life of Australia they have made remarkable contributions. Economic contributions, particularly in the pastoral and agricultural industry. They are there in the frontier and exploration history of Australia. They are there in the wars. In sport to an extraordinary degree. In literature and art and music. In all these things they have shaped our knowledge of this continent and of ourselves. They have shaped our identity. They are there in the Australian legend. We should never forget – they helped build this nation. Former Prime Minister Paul Keating, Address to the Australian Launch of the International Year of the World’s Indigenous People, Redfern Park, Sydney, December 10 1992 |
As Paul Keating acknowledged in his historic Redfern address, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have made, and continue to make, an invaluable contribution to Australia. Both within this country and internationally, Indigenous people, organisations and communities are achieving great things in many fields.
This chapter showcases some of the many success stories of Indigenous people and organisations who are out there making a difference. We have also profiled a number of "future Indigenous achievers" – impressive young people who are already shining in their chosen fields and are set to be among Australia’s next generation of leaders.
In addition, we have compiled some interesting facts and figures about the diverse range of fields in which Indigenous Australians are excelling.
