Indigenous organisations

The following is a small sample of the many successful Indigenous organisations making a difference. More profiles will be added over time; we invite you to suggest others.

“‘Artists in the Black’ is a program run by the Art Law Centre of Australia. Some of the many goals of this project are to provide legal advice to Indigenous artists, to create greater understanding of arts law issues affecting Indigenous individuals, and to foster arts law knowledge in Indigenous communities. Through these services and a strong Indigenous and non-Indigenous staff, Artists in the Black aims to strengthen Indigenous peoples’ awareness of their legal rights in the arts.”

"The Warlpiri Media Association, also known recently as PAW Media and Communications, is a Northern Territory based, non-profit community organisation managed by a locally elected Aboriginal management committee. Warlpiri Media established the first Aboriginal TV station in Australia in 1985, with the Association celebrating its 25 year anniversary in 2008. The Association broadcasts across Central Australia over its community radio network that reaches around 4,000 people spread over 16 communities in a 400,000 square kilometre area.  It provides services to a wide range of language groups including Warlpiri, Anmatjere, Pintubi/Luritja, Kaytete, Warrumungu, and Gurindji. It also produces videos in language for broadcast over its community TV stations as well as films that have national and international interest such as the popular Bush Mechanics and Aboriginal Rules. The Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal staff of Warlpiri Media Association are tireless promoters of Aboriginal talent and culture."

"The Indigenous Arts and Culture project is run by the South Australian based Carclew Youth Arts. The programs’ aims are to foster young Indigenous artistic talent in a culturally aware environment. The Indigenous Arts and Culture program showcases Indigenous talent, authors an electronic newsletter for Indigenous art centres, and provides artistic workshops aimed at combating social problems facing many Indigenous communities."
